Something interesting that I have read

I, every now and then, read some other blogs from online newspapers. I'm going to try and copy and paste a couple of postings from one particular blog. At the end I'll also post the blog website.
Note the dates on the posts as well.

Is The Bible Inerrant?
August 2nd, 2009, 5:49 pm by apetty Is the Bible without error? No! It has many errors. Many Christians have thought that if God inspired the writers of scripture then She must have kept them from making any errors. But the Bible never claims inerrancy for itself. Some Christians claim it for the Bible because of the way they think of inspiration. There are many small mistakes in the Bible. For example Matt. 28:2 says that Mary Magdalene and another Mary saw an angel roll back the entrance stone to Jesus’ tomb. But John 20:1 states that Mary Magdalene came alone to the tomb and the stone was already rolled away from the tomb. There are scores of such discrepancies as this as well as inaccurate history and dates. The Roman Catholic Church Second Vatican Council of 1962 has a marvelous, succint statement on the Bible. The Catholic Church does not accept the inerrancy of scripture but their summary of scripture is very sophisticated and good: “The book of Scripture, firmly, faithfully and without error teach that truth which God for the sake of our salvation, wished to see confided to the sacred scriptures.”This careful wording says the bible may have errors but what God wanted us to know for the sake of our salvation is placed there without error. The essential truths of the way of salvation are correctly recorded. They may not be correctly interpreted at times but they are correctly recorded, and that is good enough for human kind to know the way of salvation.

The reason I put this in was basically, this guy I think his name is Alvin Petty says that the bible is full of mistakes. So I guess according to this guy, God messes up. Is he then really God? That post was on August 2nd of this year. The next post will be from August 15th of this year, 13 days later.

A wrong View of the Bible
August 15th, 2009, 2:57 pm by apetty The fundamentalist viewpoint on the Bible misunderstands the whole nature of the Bible. It does not consist of a clear set of doctrines given straight from heaven by God and placed on paper without any human interpretation as they believe and claim. The Bible never records the direct thoughts of God without any human interpretation. Once we see the real human nature of the Bible, fundamentalism can never affect us again. The fundamentalist view of the Bible is closely akin to Islam’s view of the Qur’an which believes it is all the very words of God. Many Christians have thought this way at times but it is a great error. The Bible is many different books with totally different viewpoints and styles. They range from pessimistic to optimistic. But they are all human responses to the inspiring presence and action of God. From the writers’ experiencing God we can learn to experience God also. This truth is very worrisome to many people. They want a clear set of facts from one dogmatic viewpoint, God’s. They want them without mistake with no need of interpretation so they can simply accept them without tought, discussion or argument. But only the devil gives this kind of self destructive religion. God never does!

Now this time he says and I'll italicize the primary section. Again I'll say, apetty says the bible is full of mistakes, or I should say has "many errors", his example is that of Matthew 28:2 and John 20:1, HELLO, TWO DIFFERENT WRITERS, DIFFERENT VIEWPOINTS AND DIFFERENT STYLES or did you forget that you said that on August 15th?

You know, if the guy that is writing this blog, if that is his picture in the upper left hand corner, there is something about that face that kinda scares me...

  1. That is a very dangerous attitude that he has. I think we have different writers in the Bible giving the same account so that we can get an overall view of the events. Any person who writes has a point of view. One cannot take one verse and make it say what they want it to. You have to look at the whole text and concept in which it was written.

  2. I second Kelley's comment.
Also, too many people like to think they speak with authority when it comes to interpretation of the Bible. Too many think "they know" what the Bible is saying and they don't know. Too many think they have a good bead on things when they make outlandish assumptions. Why do they care anyway if they're just going to tear it down?
